How to Make the Best Use of the Online Database

Please note the contents of this database are designed to be used while on-line only, our logic here is that this means we can make changes to the content as any time – so you get the most up-to-date information available. This continuous updating process relies on YOU providing us with feedback after your exams. Feedback we get given (either by emailing us directly or via our forum) gets checked and then added straight in when we have complete questions. If you have a problem with some questions on the database, please place a question on the Forum atpforum.gs so that our Subject Matter Experts can advise you directly. Tech Support are not Subject Matter Experts and therefore will not be able to answer questions directly concerning content

General advice is that students, who are taking their exams in the UK, should only study the v2 database. All other students should study from BOTH v2 AND v3. For UK students however, recent feedback indicates that occasionally a question may appear in UK exams that has been taken from v3; although this is rare and is only the odd question, you may wish to look through the v3 database if you have the time. Currently this seems most prevalent in General Navigation and Radio Navigation.

Forgotten password. When you set up your account, you will have set up your username and password. If you forget or wish to change your password, please use the ‘Forgot Your Password?’ option below the login button and enter the email address you supplied during your signup. Please be aware there is no facility for you to change your username, however, if you send us an email, we can do this for you.

The graph on the front page indicates the practice exams and the dates you have taken them. The colour coded buttons will indicate your performance score (Red – score below 75%; Amber – score between 75% and 79%; Green – score over 79%). The 20 latest completed exams will appear on the graph.

Once you have logged into ATPL Online you can change the course details you have set up by following the "Change Course Details" link in the Course Setup box on the home page. Here you can change the course you are assigned to ATPL(A), ATPL(H), CPL(A) etc and also which database you are using Version 2, Version 3. The Save button preserves these settings for when you next log-in.

There are various ways of using the database and we have currently set-up a few different ways of choosing questions sets. Which option you prefer to use is based on personal choice but here is a simple explanation of the options available:

Practice Exam Containing a Set Number of Exam Questions. This option pulls a random selection of the number of questions you’ll be given in the real exam: useful, so you can see if you’re likely to complete all the questions in the time available for the exam (see Note 1).

Practice Exam Containing a Variable Number of Exam Questions. As Option 1 but this time you can set yourself a greater or lesser number of questions - up to 100 at a time from the drop down menu. Remember this is always a random selection so you can’t be certain you’ve seen every question in a particular subject (see Note 2).

Note 1: If you are having problems with a particular question, you have the opportunity to flag the question as a ‘problem' to review later.

Note 2: There is a tick box available that will only show unseen questions and means that you can see all of the questions in the database. As you go through the subject you will notice that the number of available questions reduces as you go through each exam. However, once all questions have been seen and you have been through the questions you have either got wrong or flagged as a ‘problem’ within the Test on Problem Questions option, you may wish to see all the questions again. To do this use the Sequential Question Set (see below). Alternatively, you can send us an email and we can reset the unseen questions for you (please be aware that we can only reset everything and not individual subjects.

At the end of a test, you will be asked to enter a name for the test. It is defaulted to the abbreviated subject name eg GEN, but you can called it anything you wish up to 50 characters. It will automatically record the date you took the test and the score you achieved. All attempted tests of 20 questions or more will be recorded on the graph on your home page. If you do not complete the test, the system will show that you have got the unanswered questions wrong and they will appear on your problem questions list (see below).

Pre NPA 25 Learning Objectives can be found by using the link below. The 2 blocks of numbers on the identifier do NOT include the subject number.

http://www.jaa.nl/licensing/jar-fcl_objectives.html

Post NPA 25 Learning Objectives can be found by using the link below. The 2 blocks of numbers on the identifier do NOT include the subject number.

http://www.jaa.nl/licensing/jar-fcl_consultation.html

Question Identifier. Please be aware that you can only look for one question at a time using the identifier number. This is because problem questions are automatically saved to the system and can be called upon using the Test on Problem Questions option (see below).

Sequential Question Set. This option allows you to work your way sequentially through all the questions in a subject. Decide how many questions you want to see for each exam and then can systematically work through the subject. The database does not remember your last question so you have to remember how far you’ve got (starting at 1, working through 20 questions – next time you start, your start point is 21). This option is limited to a maximum of 200 questions at any one time. Experience has shown us that limiting the number of questions allows the system to function more efficiently and students are better protected if their internet goes down for any reason.

Test on Problem Questions. After you have gone through all of the questions, you can then test yourself (after further revision) on all of the questions that you have either got wrong or have flagged as 'problems' (see Note 2). All questions are listed by subject and will remain in this list until you have answered them correctly. If a flagged question is answered correctly it will be removed from the list unless it is flagged again. To select the questions you wish to do again, highlight each question (CTRL + mouse click)

Search for Questions. You can search for questions using this option by entering specific words and phrases. The search only looks for the words contained within the questions and is only as accurate as the information you enter.

As you work through the questions, the "info" button offers additional information concerning the correct answers but if this information is insufficient or you've a question about how an answer is reached which has no "info" available so far, please check on the forum at atpforum.gs to see if the explanation is already available (use the search facility by question ID). If not, please post a query in the relevant section of the Technical Subject section, making sure you include the question ID so that one of the tech experts can explain it.

We try really hard to continuously improve the database but this needs you to send us feedback. If you find any typos, duplicates, weird formatting – really anything that hampers your studying, then please let us know. If you can think of improvements we can make, please feel free to say so. We can’t promise miracles but this is an evolving system – the sequential and search options for this new version only came about following feedback!

Now get to work – but remember - memorising all the answers isn't an option for these exams, you must understand how the answers are reached, that way when you get given a calculation you've seen before but using a different chart you apply your knowledge and can get the correct answer.

We only offer technical support 9-5, Monday to Friday (UK time) but if you have an urgent problem please send us an email or put a post on the forum – leaving us a telephone message will definitely mean no-one will get back to you until Monday morning at the earliest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: Why is this new website different to the old website?

Answer: The old system was what we called a ‘dumb database’. This meant that your data was never stored and therefore there was no need to have a constant internet connection; you could just download the questions and they would stay on your computer in your internet cache. However, any questions that you had problems with you would have had to write down and type in to access them again. In addition, when you cached questions you would not be able to see the graphics if available or any information contained in the info button; both of these required access to the internet.

The new system has been written differently so that it offers more functionality. The new system is written using html, which means that, as well as being much more secure, you can now access the database using a Smartphone (you couldn’t before because i-Phones will not accept products written in Flash). However, the major change in terms of how it works is that you must be constantly online to use it. The reason for this is that the new system now records all your data on our server including, most importantly, questions you have got wrong and those that you have flagged as a problem. As a result of this, information needs to constantly flow between your access point (PC, Smartphone, i-Pad etc) and our server. The main advantage of this is that you can now be tested only on these ‘problem questions’, by subject, at a later time.

Question 2: Do I have to be online all the time?

Answer: Yes you do. The system needs a constant flow of information between you and our servers to record your data.

Question 3: Where do I get the App for the i-Phone?

Answer: There is no App for the i-Phone. You have to access it through your web browser as you would on a PC.

Question 4: Can more than one person use my account?

Answer: Definitely not, all accounts are for personal use only. When you set up an account your username and password must be kept safe and should not be shared amongst your colleagues and friends. Failure to adhere to these instructions, may result in your account being suspended.

Question 5: Is the database the same as the old site?

Answer: Yes, the content of the new site uses exactly the same database of questions and extended answers.

Question 6: What do I do if I think that a question is incorrect, confusing or I am not sure the answer is as shown?

Answer: You need to place a question on our Forum atpforum.gs so that our Subject Matter Experts can advise you directly. Tech Support are not Subject Matter Experts and therefore will not be able to answer questions directly concerning content.

Question 7: What is the difference between version 2 and version 3 of the database?

Answer: Version 2 contains the questions for CQB13. Version 3 contains the questions for CQB14. The reason they are separate is because in the UK, students were only taking their exams from the CQB13 database and it would mean many more questions for them to study which they would not be tested on. Outside the UK, students were being tested from a different syllabus and included questions from CQB14 as well. The 2 versions contain completely different questions. We know that the UK is starting to teach from the NPA 25 syllabus and the ‘new’ CQB 15 database. However, as far as we're aware, CQB15 is in effect CQB14 with many of the gross errors corrected; the major reason why the UK hasn't used CQB14 is that they felt it contained far too many inaccurate questions etc. For the past 8 months, in the light of all the feedback we've received, we've been making subtle adjustments to the bad questions and answers in CQB14 so we hope that when CQB15 is used in the exams you will not get many surprises.

Question 8: Which database do I use to study from?

Answer: General advice is that students, who are taking their exams in the UK, should only study the v2 database. All other students should study from BOTH v2 AND v3. For UK students however, recent feedback indicates that questions may appear in UK exams that have been taken from v3; although they are few in number, you may wish to look through the v3 database if you have the time. Currently, this seems most prevalent in General Navigation and Radio Navigation. You will note that, currently, there are no v3 questions for Air Law, Mass and Balance, VFR Comms and IFR Comms.

Question 9: What is CQB 15 and when will it be incorporated into our database?

Answer: As far as we're aware, CQB15 is in effect CQB14 with many of the gross errors corrected; the major reason why the UK hasn't used CQB14 is that they felt it contained far too many inaccurate questions etc. For the past 8 months, in the light of all the feedback we've received, we've been making subtle adjustments to the bad questions and answers in CQB14, so we hope that when CQB15 is used in the exams, you will not get many surprises. Of course, the proof will come when the first students face CQB15.

Question 10: How do I change my password or reset it if I have forgotten it?

Answer: If you forget or wish to change your password, please use the ‘Forgot Your Password?’ option below the login button and enter the email address you supplied during your signup. Please be aware there is currently no facility for you to change your username, however, if you send us an email, we can do this for you.

Question 11: What is the best way for me to study?

Answer: How you study is down to personal choice. However, through experience of chatting to students, we have offered you a number of options to select from. If you are using the database for the first time, we recommend using the practice exam containing a variable number of exam questions (2nd option). Select the number of questions and go through the exam making sure that if you see a question that you are not sure about, the 'flag this question' box is ticked. Make sure also that the 'only show unseen questions box' is ticked and you will notice that the number of available questions reduce as you go through more exams. Eventually you will have seen all the questions when the number of available questions becomes zero.

All the questions that you have either got wrong or flagged as problems are now included in the problems questions section for you to review. Those questions that you have either got right and are not considered problems to you, do not need to be taken again - ultimately saving you study time.

Question 12: Why can I only search for one question at a time in the Question Identifier box?

Answer: The new database now saves all your problem questions so there should be no need to search for more than one question at a time. We fully understand that students, who are transferring from the old database, will have a list of problem questions, but unfortunately due to programming constraints and the fact that the new system now saves all your problem questions, this was a decision that we had to make.

Question 13: When I reach the end of my subscription, do I have to create a new account to continue?

Answer: No, when you reach the end of your subscription, the next time you log in, you will be asked if you want to resubscribe and for what length of time. You do not need to worry about everything you have done so far as all the data is saved on our servers for 6 months after your subscription has expired and you can carry on where you left off.

Question 14: I seem to be having problems logging in at work but not at home, what should I do?

Answer: The main reason why this is the case is that your work internet is probably blocking the site. If you speak to your system administrator, they may be able to amend your account to allow access. Unfortunately, we have no control over this, so will not be able to speak to anyone on your behalf!

Question 15: Can I have a refund if I am not happy with the database?

Answer: All requests for refunds will be addressed on a case by case basis. However, we feel our record on customer service is second to none and we will always treat requests sympathetically. If a refund is requested and granted, it will be done on a pro-rata basis depending upon how long the account has been in use and how many days are remaining.

Question 16: Can I print out the questions for use off line?

Answer: Unfortunately not, the database is secure and you cannot do this.

Question 17: Can I take all the questions in 1 subject in one attempt?

Answer: No you cannot do this. You can take a practice exam up to 100 questions or you can use the sequential option for up to 200 questions at a time. Experience has shown us that limiting the number of questions allows the system to function more efficiently and students are better protected if their internet goes down for any reason.

Question 18: Can I change my email address?

Answer: No, you cannot, however, if you send us an email, we will do it for you.

Question 19: Do all the questions have Learning Objectives assigned to them?

Answer: All the questions apart from about 7 or 8 have been assigned LOs (we do not have the LOs for the ones that haven’t). Please be aware that the LOs set by the JAA are not 100% accurate (although very close) and we have no control over this. It is best to use the LO function together with the search function to get the questions you need.

Question 20: How do I retake an exam that I have just studied? I used to be able to do this on the old site.

Answer: You cannot do this on the new site, but there should be no need to do so as the new website works in a different way. All your problem questions are now saved in a different place automatically so you can test yourself only on these later.

Question 21: How does the graph work?

Answer: The system saves any test that you do that has a minimum of 20 questions. If you come out of a quiz part way through, the system will assume that you have got the unanswered questions wrong and the score will be recorded. However, any questions that have not been attempted will still be considered as 'unseen' by the system. At the end of the test, you can name the test as you wish. The default setting is the 3 letter abbreviation for the subject and the date.

Question 22: When and how long are the ATPL exams?

Answer: The exams take place over a 4 days period and can be found in Section J JAR-FCL Theory Exams. The details of the timings of the ATPL (A)/(H) exams can be found on page 5 of the document and CPL (A)/(H) on page 6.

Question 23: What do I do if the website goes down for a significant period of time?

Answer: Our website is now monitored throughout the world and any drop in performance is now notified to us immediately. If it is not something we can fix immediately, we will place a note on our Forum and give you an estimated time for it to be fixed. Clearly we would like zero down time, but sometimes servers do go down and we want to assure you that we will always try to get the problem fixed and back working again as soon as possible.

Question 24: When do you make changes to the website and the server?

Answer: General changes to the content of our website take place regularly and you should not notice any down time at all as these changes are uploaded. However, major Windows Server updates need to occur occasionally and these will always take place on the second Wednesday of every month between 0600 and 0700 GMT. These essential updates could mean that the site may be unavailable during this period.

Question 25: Why are the problem questions now separated by Para and Subpara?

Answer: At the request of several users, the problem questions are now categorized by Learning Objective. All the problem questions are still there but now separated out. You can still select these questions either individually (Cntrl + click on each question) or by a random selection using the dropdown list.
